Hitting children is wrong. Full stop.
If you can’t think of a better way to discipline a child, a tiny human who is smaller than you, you need to re-evaluate your approach.
There is NOTHING that a…
I agree with the last post on this about the differences between abuse and spanking. I’ve been on the RECEIVING end of both of those. From my grandmother (who was a depression kid and did not understand this whole don’t hit your kids deal) and my stepmother (who liked to use intimidation tactics and tear me down to the point of feeling worthless).
I never questioned my grandmother’s love for me. When she swatted me it was because I had done something REALLY REALLY bad. It was always either a yardstick to the butt or a hand, and would always explain everything about the situation. Would tell me why I was getting punished and how this was not acceptable behaviors. Afterwards, when I was calm and had time to think about matter she would give me a hug and tell me that she loved me. She would tell me to do my best and to try and be better because no one liked the bad people of the world except God. I tell this to my kids though I make it a point to skip the god part of things cause I would rather they learn about faith and such on their own.
My stepmother in contrast liked to use whatever was handy and tell me I was useless and stupid. She also would do it for things that were ridiculously small. One instance I can clearly recall was when I was about 12. I have always had attention issues and ended up burning the vegetables we were due to have with dinner. She was furious when she got home and whacked me in the head with a pan screaming that these pots were expensive and why wasn’t I paying attention to the food. I was 12! I had never even touched a stove without a parent being right there to help and keep me on task! Her favorite question for the majority of my time with her was “What are you stupid!?”
I doubt most people will see the differences in these two women’s treatment of me. Personally though I say that you do whatever you need to in order to make that child you have a productive member of society. Even if you hate society as a whole (cause really I don’t like a number of parts of it) you teach them right and wrong by whatever means you need to. Be it spanking, time outs, or what have you. You step your ass up and be a parent to that child, give them their boundaries and EFFECTIVE punishments and STICK TO THEM. Teach your children discipline and what is acceptable behavior. Otherwise you have nothing but some apathetic jerk that thinks he is the center of the universe and will go suing companies for the gas in his repossessed car at the amount that he would pay it off.
Yeah that’s another story entirely there…
